Danzdanzdance’s co-trainer Chris Gibbs is comfortable with the equal New Zealand Derby favourite’s build-up to the Ellerslie classic – apart from one thing that’s beyond his control.
“I just really want her to get a decent draw for once,” he told www.theinformant.co.nz this morning. “She’s had terrible draws in her last couple of starts and run really well both times. She must be due a good one. If we can finally get a decent alley for the big race, we’ll be very happy.”
The Mastercraftsman filly drew 16 in the 17-horse field for the $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic, dropping back to near-last before charging home to finish sixth.
It was a similar story in last Saturday’s Gr. 2 Avondale Guineas, where Danzdanzdance drew 12 in a 15-horse field. She sat third-last and was hampered rounding the home turn, but stretched out impressively in the straight for a close second to On The Rocks.
Danzdanzdance’s eye-catching performances have earned her a quote of $5 for the Vodafone New Zealand Derby on Saturday week, sharing favouritism with the Karaka Million 3YO Classic winner Scott Base.
“She’s come through Saturday’s run really well,” Gibbs added.
