FORMER DERBY HOPE SETS SIGHTS ON AUCKLAND CUP
A powerful staying performance to complete a hattrick of victories has convinced co-trainer Donna Logan that her former New Zealand Derby hopeful Mosquito (NZ) (Golan) has what it takes to tackle the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) in March next year.
The five-year-old gelding produced a sustained finish in the home straight to snatch a win from stablemate Uncle Shayne (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) in the Steve Haywood Master Jeweller 2100 (2100m) at Ruakaka on Saturday and earn his shot at some of the summer’s feature staying events.
“I originally bought him as a Derby prospect but he was just too big for his own good and wasn’t strong enough to get to a race like that so I had to be patient with him,” explained Logan. “He then suffered a hoof injury late last year which put him off the scene for quite awhile but it was actually a blessing in disguise as it has allowed him to fully grow into his frame.
“He has won three in a row and although it wasn’t probably the best race planning by stepping him from 1400 metres to 2100 metres in just three starts, the races were all on our back doorstep and he handled it comfortably.” Mosquito will now head for a two week break before resuming work as Logan looks at the best way to qualify the son of Golan for his Auckland Cup goal. “I think we will try for some of those good races at the Ellerslie Christmas Carnival for him as he can earn his way into the Cup that way,” she said.
