WINNING CARNIVAL START FOR LOGAN TEAM

Although busy on Saturday attending the wedding of a long serving staff member, Donna Logan made time to watch recent recruit Handsome Mates kick off the Logan stable assault on Riccarton’s Cup Week Carnival in winning style with the promise of more to come over the remaining two racedays.

The former Chris Wood prepared galloper was transferred to the Logan stable in July for a regular beach training regime and saluted the judge in emphatic fashion for the Ruakaka based partnership after leading all the way in the opening event on Saturday’s 2000 Guineas raceday programme.

It was the second win for a five strong team that the Logan’s sent south earlier in the spring with that arsenal boosted by the recent arrival of class sprinter Durham Town who is in town for Wednesday’s Gr. 3 Lindauer Stewards Stakes (1200m).

“We were in Paihia for my PA Michelle’s wedding on Saturday so couldn’t make it to Riccarton but we were all watching the first race and cheering our bloke home so it was a great way to start a special day for the team,” reflected Logan.

“We haven’t had the horse for that long and he has thrived during the trip away so there was some confidence he could go well as it looked as though he had the conditions to suit on the weekend.

“He is the second winner from the five we sent down for an extended campaign in September although all of that team have gone really well while they have been down there.

“Most of them are running on Wednesday along with Durham Town and Uncle Shayne who have gone for a hit and run mission on the day.”

Those Logan stable runners include Timaru winner Ishimine, Jungle Knight and Whistling Straits who will clash with stablemate Uncle Shayne in the open 2000 metre event on the day.

Logan is excited about the prospects of Durham Town who has thrived since his campaign opener at Rotorua where he finished hard for third in Listed company at Rotorua.

“He has come on nicely since that run at Rotorua and I couldn’t be happier with him,” she said. “It’s a good field but on his best form he would have to be in with a winning chance.”
