CAMERON STEALS FIRST RACE OF THE CARNIVAL

Matt Cameron gave the Riccarton track the big thumbs up after he “stole” the first event of NZ Cup week today.

Cameron rated Handsome Mates perfectly in front in the Christchurch Casino Premier 85 1600 metres, slowing the field down after getting to the front, then putting the pressure on early in the run home.

Handsome Mates quickly put a few lengths on his nearest rivals and kept up a strong gallop to win by five lengths from Likeapins, who ran on late wide out to just head the favourite, London Dream, who had enjoyed the run in the trail.

Handsome Mates is one of the horses sent south by Ruakaka trainers Donna and Dean Logan and preceded today’s win with a second on the track last month behind No Emotion, who wound up fifth this time.

“I didn’t think he would go as good as he did, being on a hard track and he hadn’t raced for over a month,” said Cameron. “We got a nice, soft lead, and he kicked well. He did it on his ear in the end.

“The track is brilliant. There’s a bit of moisture in it, but it’s in perfect order.”

Handsome Mates began his career from the Cambridge stable of Chris Wood before heading to Ruakaka. He has now won five races.
